Destination Guide
Pompeii from Naples Cruise Port
Pompeii is approximately 25 km from the Port of Naples — typically a 35 to 50-minute drive depending on traffic. The UNESCO site covers around 44 hectares, with highlights including the Forum, the House of the Faun, the amphitheatre and the plaster-cast victims. Most visitors comfortably spend 2.5 to 3 hours inside. With a private driver, you skip the coach queue at the main entrance and your driver can drop you at the Porta Marina gate, which is closest to the most visited areas. Our 4-hour half-day tour (NPHD1) is ideal for ships with a tighter port window; our 9-hour full-day tours combine Pompeii with destinations such as Sorrento, the Amalfi Coast or Vesuvius.
Amalfi Coast from Naples Cruise Port
The Amalfi Coast road (SS163) runs 50 km between Sorrento and Salerno, passing through Positano, Praiano, Ravello and Amalfi town. From the Port of Naples, Sorrento is roughly 50 km by road — around 50 to 70 minutes — and Positano is approximately 65 km, typically 75 to 90 minutes. The drive itself is part of the experience: narrow cliff road, sea views, pastel-coloured villages. Traffic can be significant between June and September. Private vehicles handle this road far better than coaches, which struggle with the hairpin bends. A full-day Amalfi Coast tour typically includes stops at Positano and either Ravello or Amalfi town, with time at each.
Sorrento from Naples Cruise Port
Sorrento sits on a cliff above the Bay of Naples, approximately 50 km from the port by the coastal motorway — typically 50 to 70 minutes by private car. The town itself is small enough to walk in 90 minutes: Piazza Tasso, the historic centre, the cliffside gardens and the local limoncello shops. Sorrento works as a standalone half-day stop or as a gateway to the Amalfi Coast. It is also the most convenient base for Mount Vesuvius if you want to combine both in a single day, as Vesuvius is approximately 30 km from Sorrento.
Mount Vesuvius from Naples Cruise Port
Mount Vesuvius is approximately 15 km east of Naples city centre. From the Port of Naples the drive to the Vesuvius visitor car park takes around 40 to 60 minutes. From the car park there is a 30-minute walk to the crater rim at approximately 1,281 metres above sea level. Visitors can walk around the crater rim (about 1.4 km). The views over the Bay of Naples on a clear day are exceptional. Most visitors spend 1.5 to 2 hours at the site. Vesuvius pairs naturally with Pompeii or Herculaneum for a full-day tour.

Who This Tour Is For
Cruise Passengers
If your ship is in Naples for the day, a private tour is the most time-efficient option. You get door-to-pier service, no group waiting and a driver who knows the ship schedule.
Families
Private vehicles mean no rushing, no stranger-filled coaches and the ability to stop when the kids need a break. Infant seats and booster seats are available on request.
Couples
A private car for two on the Amalfi Coast road, stopping where you want, is a very different experience from a 40-seat coach. If you have one day and want to actually enjoy it, private is the better option.
History & Culture Travellers
Our drivers are trained in local history and can provide commentary throughout. For deeper immersion, we can arrange certified local guides at Pompeii, Herculaneum and other sites.

How Your Pickup Works at the Port of Naples
Not Sure Which Tour Fits Your Day?
| Your Situation | Best Tour Type | Why It Works |
|---|---|---|
| 4 hours in port | Half-Day: Pompeii only (NPHD1) | Purpose-built for tight port windows — direct to Pompeii and back with time to spare. |
| 8–9 hours in port | Full-Day: Amalfi Coast (Positano + Ravello) or Pompeii + Sorrento | The Amalfi Coast road takes time to drive. 8+ hours is the minimum to enjoy it without feeling pressured to leave. |
| Travelling with children | Sorrento + Positano | Pompeii is visually engaging for older children. Vesuvius has a manageable walk. Sorrento has open spaces and easy movement compared to the narrow Amalfi cliff roads. |
| History is your priority | Pompeii + Herculaneum or Pompeii + Vesuvius | Herculaneum is smaller than Pompeii but better preserved — a genuine archaeological complement. Vesuvius gives geological context to both sites. |
| Scenery is your priority | Amalfi Coast (NP1) or Sorrento + Positano (NP3) | The coastal road between Positano and Ravello is one of the most photographed drives in Europe. Prioritise this if the landscape matters more than archaeology. |
| Large group (8+ people) | Any full-day tour with minibus option | For groups larger than 8 pax, the best way to visit the Amalfi Coast, is by car or minivan. Minibuses are a lot harder to maneuver down to the town center of Positano, along with the parking issues. It is therefore preferable and strongly recommended to split the group into smaller vehicles for a more enjoyable experience. |

FAQ
Q: How far is Pompeii from the Port of Naples?
A: Pompeii is approximately 25 km from the Port of Naples. The drive takes 30 minutes by private car, depending on traffic. The site itself requires 2 to 3 hours to visit the main highlights comfortably. (2 hours mininimum)
Q: How far is the Amalfi Coast from the Port of Naples?
A: Sorrento, the gateway to the Amalfi Coast, is roughly 50 km from the port — about 75/90 minutes by private car. Positano is approximately 65 km, typically 90 minutes. Traffic on the coastal road between June and September can add time.
Q: Can I visit both Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast in one day from Naples?
A: Combining Pompeii and the full Amalfi Coast in a single day is generally not practical — there is not enough time to do both properly. A more workable full-day option is Pompeii plus Sorrento, or Pompeii and Positano. We can plan the best combination based on your ship’s departure time.
Q: What happens if my cruise ship arrives late to Naples?
A: We monitor cruise arrivals and adjust your pickup time accordingly, however we recommend always to be back 2 hours before the cruise ship departs. If your ship is delayed, your tour is simply shortened a bit, luckily this does not happen often.
Q: Will I get back to my ship on time?
A: Yes. All our tours are planned around your ship’s all-aboard time. We leave a minimum buffer of 2 hours before departure.
Q: Is Pompeii worth visiting from a cruise ship?
A: Pompeii is one of the most significant archaeological sites in the world and is genuinely worth a half-day from the port. If your ship is only in Naples for 4 hours, our dedicated half-day Pompeii tour (NPHD1) is the most efficient way to spend that time.
Q: Can I book a private tour just for my family?
A: Yes. All our tours are private — the vehicle and driver are exclusively for your group. There are no strangers joining your tour. Vehicles range from standard sedans (up to 3 passengers) to minivans (up to 8 passengers).
Q: Do I need to book in advance?
A: We recommend booking at least 15 days in advance or more, before arrival. Shore excursion dates during cruise season (April to October) fill quickly, sometimes months in advance. Last-minute requests may be possible but cannot be guaranteed.
Q: Is Mount Vesuvius safe to visit?
A: Yes. Vesuvius is an active volcano but is continuously monitored by the Osservatorio Vesuviano. The summit trail is open year-round, weather permitting. The walk from the car park to the crater rim is approximately 30/45 minutes on a maintained path.
Q: What is included in the tour price?
A: The price covers the private vehicle, English-speaking driver, fuel and motorway tolls. Entrance tickets to sites (Pompeii, Vesuvius, etc.), meals and personal expenses are not included. We can advise on current ticket prices and help with pre-booking to avoid queues.
Q: What type of vehicles do you use?
A: We use Mercedes-Benz sedans, minivans and minibuses depending on group size. All vehicles are air-conditioned, regularly maintained and licensed for passenger transport. Drivers are professionally trained and insured.
Q: Can I customise my tour stops?
A: Yes. Private tours are fully customisable. If you want to spend more time at one site, add a lunch stop in a specific town or avoid a particular area, just let us know when booking and we will plan accordingly.
